HVAC making unusual noises?? Time for a service call…
When it’s working properly, your HVAC makes a pleasant noise that’s easy to get used to. Unfortunately, even the best-made HVAC systems can and do experience serious problems that require attention, troubleshooting and possible repairs. These problems are often anticipated or indicated by strange noises that interrupt the pleasant sounds you’ve become addicted to. Here are five of the most common
- Banging Sounds in Your Compressor
If you hear a banging sound emerge from your air conditioner’s compressor, you could be dealing with a loose fan blade that’s repeatedly banging against something else inside the housing. This is especially likely if the noise occurs at regular intervals. Consequences of this problem may include worn-down fan blades that require frequent and increasingly expensive replacement.
- Constant Buzzing or Rattling
A vague, seemingly random buzzing or rattling sound probably isn’t being caused by a single blade. Instead, it could be the result of loose screws or bolts within your air conditioning system. In turn, these loose items can cause other elements of the device to vibrate in strange ways. If they’re not addressed by a professional, such problems can result in reduced system efficiency and lifespan.
- Hisses and Whistles in Your Ductwork
Hissing and whistling noises typically hint at faulty, worn-down or improperly installed seals in your ductwork and vents. It’s not advisable to simply caulk these seals. A professional needs to diagnose and respond to any air leakage issue.
- Screeches or Squeals
Screeches or squealing noises from within your AC’s main unit may be the result of loose or defective belts within the machine. Like cars, air conditioners use belts and other motorized equipment to do their jobs, and when they wear down they can cause serious efficiency issues.
- Irregular Clanging or Grinding
Grinding noises are often the result of failing fan motors. If you suspect that your motor is on its last legs, get a professional to inspect its bearings for wear and tear.
